As part of a new target to phase out new gas boiler installations by 2035, the government is offering UK households grants of up to £5,000 to replace traditional gas boilers with heat pumps.
While families will not be forced to make the switch by 2035, the target is for all new heating installations to be low carbon. This switch could have a number of benefits. Not only will the switch to heat pumps lower emissions, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and have a positive environment impact. Switching to low carbon heating sources, such as heat pumps, could also cut heating bills, as they often cost less to run compared with traditional gas boilers.
There are several different types of heat pumps. Air source heat pumps work similarly to a refrigerator, but in reverse, using a compressor to increase the temperature of the air which is then used to heat your home. Meanwhile, ground source heat pumps use pipes which are buried in the garden. Heat is extracted from the ground to heat radiators, underfloor heating, hot water, and any other heating systems in your home.
